The Hair Transplant: Bullet Points

The Hair Transplant- Bullet Points | Laser Hair Therapy | Austin
I often find that in my practice when talking to patients about hair transplantation, all the
details can feel like a lot to take in during their first appointment. So I decided to put
together the basic bullet points to know about how hair transplantation works from your first
appointment to your end results. Hopefully this will be helpful for those who want an
overview of the process.

Initial Consultation

• Patients thinking about hair restoration whether transplant or other options will come
into the office, fill out some paperwork about their medical history, and meet with Dr.Hall to discuss their options.

What is Hair Transplantation
• A hair transplant is a minor surgical procedure to improve baldness. At Austin HairGraft, we employ a technique called FUE (follicular unit extraction) which removes
hair follicles one at a time and transplants them to areas of thinning or balding.

The Procedure.

• Local anesthesia is administered to numb the scalp. Oral medication may also be given
to relax the patient.
• The scalp is thoroughly cleaned and prepped for extraction. The donor site, or area
where transplants will be taken, is shaved for easier extraction of each follicle.
• Each individual hair follicle is extracted from the donor site and harvested for
implantation. This process along with implantation require the most time during the
procedure. Often patients will sleep or watch a movie during this stage.
• The recipient site, or areas that will receive these healthy follicles, are cleaned.
• Tiny incisions are made to the recipient site where the healthy follicles will be
implanted.
• Donor follicles are carefully placed in the incisions one at a time. During a single
treatment session, hundreds or even thousands of hair follicles may be transplanted.

Why the Procedure is Performed
Hair transplantation can improve the appearance and self-confidence in patients who are
experiencing hair thinning or hair loss. This procedure cannot create new hair. It can only
move the hair you already have to other areas that are of concern.
Most people who opt for a hair transplant have male or female pattern baldness. This type
of hair loss is generally on the front or top of the scalp.

Risks

Risks of any hair transplantation include:
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Scarring
It is possible that the transplanted hair will not give the results desired. Dr. Hall will work to
give patients realistic expectations from their procedure.
Hair transplant patients should be healthy, or surgery is less likely to be safe and successful.
Discuss your risks and options with your Dr. Hall before undergoing this procedure.

After the Procedure
Follow our post care instructions about caring for your transplants. This is especially
important to ensure healing.
For a day or two after the procedure, you may have a large surgical dressing or a smaller
dressing that you can cover with a hat. During the recovery period after surgery, your
scalp may be very tender. You may need to take pain medicine which will be discussed with
Dr. Hall during your post care.

Results

Most hair transplants result in excellent hair growth within 6-12 months after the procedure.
More than one treatment session may be needed for desired results. To learn more about this
procedure, contact Hall Plastic Surgery at 855-851-4832.
